Plate with Thick Bottom

The idea for this model was simple: take a long strip of Miura Ori corrugation, unfold it around one edge, wrap around, and get a plate whose bottom will be a thick layer of the corrugation rather than just a single layer of paper. The issue lay in executing it properly. Despite many efforts such as wet-folding and month-long dry-shaping in a special contraption I built to keep the bottom of the plate compressed, I was not able to prevent the springy Satogami paper from unfolding in the center. I hoped to be able to keep the opening in the center tiny, but it ended up being quite visible. Nonetheless, the end result is aesthetically pleasing, even though the hole prevents it from being used as an actual plate.
Looking at the plate straight down, you can spot a moiré pattern similar to the one appearing in the seeds of a sunflower.
